Hanukkah Radio Audio- 2008

Today on Sirius XM's Shade45 we broadcast the 2008 edition of Hanukkah Radio. The theme for this year was "This Is How We Jew It", and we did Jew it indeed.
The Shady 5 list for this year was our favorite Rick Rubin productions, we had another installment of Jew Or Not A Jaw, played several ridiculous Hanukkah songs, and had a special guest in our second hour.
If you have a couple of hours, check out the full broadcast below. No offense to anyone offended much. Leave your comments and suggestions for the show, and we'll try to improve it in 2009... we sure could use help!

If for some reason you want more, click here for 2007's show.

All Soled Out

Thanks to everyone that made the online sale of the Eminem The Way I Am Air Jordan 2 Retro a major success. The 313 pairs of sneakers went on sale yesterday and sold out in less than 30 minutes...
As mentioned below, proceeds from the sale with be donated from Nike Jordan Brand to the Marshall Mathers Foundation, an organization benefiting troubled and disadvantaged youth primarily in the Michigan and Detroit-area.
Pictured above is a photo I took from The Way I Am book release event in NYC last month of a prototype of the shoe (it since changed of course). The New York Times Best Seller book is in stores now!

Ex-Bully Short Film

My boy Joey Garfield sent me this short film that he wrote and directed.
Joey is an awesome, talented guy. Please check this out, it's a guaranteed chuckle.

Random trivia: Joey was in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He was the kid who was wearing a Birmingham Grove's varsity jacket that said something like "Man, I hope Ferris doesn't die. He was supposed to get me out of summer school." Can you imagine being in that film? Stuff of legend, Joey. Oh, and Joey was either the octopus or the robot (I can't remember which) in the Beastie Boy's "Intergalactic" video. Yup, for real.

Classic Hip-Hop Lego Covers

Check out this link to see more of the above... classic rap albums created in Lego form. Most of these are really great. Some of them are hilarious. Some of them honestly look a little, well... funny. I don't know why, but the Epmd Back In Business cover is my favorite. Props to Teddy2Shoes for the link.

Jamal from East Boston

I don't know if it's the kid's voice, the way he tells the story, the punchline or what but this voicemail left on the system at Shade45 really cracks me up. It could be an adult with a fake children's voice or something but I don't care it's still hilarious. Props to you Jamal and Angela Yee and the whole Shade45 Morning Show.

B.o.B "Created A Monster" Nintendo DS Commercial

The omnipresent B.o.B's song "Created A Monster" from his now available 5th Dimension EP was cleverly used in the Nintendo DS commercial below. We wish B.o.B's chorus was in there, but he's chillin' with Mario and Them so it's a good look regardless.

The Knux- Daddy's Little Girl, R.S.

The Knux song "Daddy's Little Girl" is the title track for the new Run's House spin-off, Daddy'a Girls. (It's not until the end of the clip... sorry).

Also, The Knux album Remind Me In 3 Days... was listed as the 28th best album of the year by Rolling Stone magazine. Nice.

Bacon & Avacado Burgers & McWhat?!?

I passed this place in LA and I was perplexed. I've never even heard of a bacon & avocado burger, let alone knew that there was a whole establishment dedicated to this sandwich. Way to keep it niche, Howard. My man.

In other burger musings, this real-life Coming to America scenario reported in the Detroit Free Press that some dude opened up a restaurant across the street from a real McDonald's restaurant called "Nicky's D's". Click here to see their ridiculous trademark infringing sign and logos... Takes chutzpah for sure.

MC Breed & Big Proof

I was saddened to hear about the very untimely passing of Flint MI's own MC Breed. In 1990 his "Ain't No Future In Yo' Frontin'" was THE song in The D (and a lot of other places too). Breed was a local hero and a nation wide celebrity early on in the rap game working with the likes of 2Pac and our friend Proof. I've always liked their collaboration from Proof's Searching for Jerry Garcia, so check it out below.

Rasheed Wallace has nicknames for each of his teammates on The Pistons. Check out the video. He's not the only one that thinks Stuckey resembles 50. He calls Maxiell "Darkness"... Aye yo?

A Couple of Good Links

It was bound to happen... Some artist made a portrait of Eminem made out of... M&M's.
Check out the link here. Apparently, the art was purchased by Ripley's Believe It Or Not. Sweet.

Almost Lost Detroit

Check out this video for Detroit hip-hop artist Marqise Porter's song "Almost Lost Detroit". This isn't a high budget slick video, just a collection of pictures showing the blight and despair in The D along with some bleak, sobering statistics. I thought this would be a good companion to run with the recent article I posted below about the potential automobile industry bail-out. Imagine, if you could, that the situation could get much worse even.

Thanks to Gluck for the link.

Shade45 Playlist

Since Shade45 is now available on both XM and Sirius Satellite Radio and our audience has more than doubled, I'm going to continue my campaign to draw more subscribers. We play the most uncensored hip-hop on radio anywhere in this country now, especially since 66 Raw on XM has become Shade45.
A lot of folks are under the mistaken impression that we play a majority of Eminem and Shady related material on our station. While we do favor that stuff (why wouldn't we) we support a lot more than just that. To demonstrate, here is our current active records playlist. I'll be posting these from time to time to make people aware of what's going on with Shade45.

Big 3 Bail-Out

For those of you who don't live in Michigan and may have a hard time understanding the impact that the auto-industry has on the local economy check out this article from today's Detroit Free Press. The bail out going before the Senate on Monday is critical to The Big 3 Automakers (GM, Ford & Chrysler). While I fully believe in free market economics the impact that the collapse of our original American industry would have on the nation would be devastating. Yes, I'm biased being from Detroit and living there part-time, but please read the article. It's more than just some old school businessmen who can't get it together to make a change in new times... It's the essence of this once thriving city and the core industry of this nation that hangs in the balance.
The photo above is an ode to the Ford family, which owns the Detroit Lions and obviously the majority of Ford Motor Company. Maybe a bail out can help the team? Nah, probably not.

Spartans Going Too Far?

In and around the Michigan State University campus, and I'm not sure where else, there is some organization called Biting Rivals that has put up billboards about University of Michigan's loss to the Spartans and their lost season. Please visit the ridiculous website by clicking here.
I'm a Spartan, but is all this really necessary? Ok, maybe...

Best Burgers in The D.

Today the Detroit Free Press published what I consider to be a cowardly list of the "Best Burgers in Metro Detroit". You can view the slideshow style listings here. I do appreciate the fact that the Freep (as it's known here on the web) is writing about things like hamburgers, I really do. However the list has several problems. First, it is way too broad in it's categories- "Best Old-School Burgers", "Best Loaded Burgers", "Best High-End Burgers", "Best Alternative Burgers", "Other Burgers Not to Miss"... A burger is a beef burger, unless it's a turkey or chicken or some other beef burger and it doesn't belong in this discussion anyway. What the hell is the difference between an "old school" and a "high-end burger" other than where they are served and what the ingredients are? All we care about is which tastes better. If you are going to make sub-categories for these lists how can you not include a "Best Sliders" section? This is DETROIT the HOME of GREASE.
The list is cowardly because it's too broad. It should be a 20 item list tops. It's also cowardly because it lists Miller's Bar in Dearborn first. Don't get me wrong, they serve a hell of a burger there. But it's the obvious choice. I mean, even national publications like GQ listed it as one of the top burgers in America.
Be brave, be strong, be original.
Finally, the fact that the Big Chief at Duggan's and that Hunter House are listed as "Others" is a travesty. Finally, my family and childhood favorite Greens's Hamburgers in Farmington didn't even make the list. I call bullshit.

Shade45 on XM!

As of today, Eminem's Shade45 satellite radio station, is available on XM in addition to it's original home on Sirius. Shade45 can be heard on channel 66 by XM subscribers, as well as channel 45 on Sirius. We are very excited that our audience has more than doubled in size... Commitment, Regression & Recycling

Last Saturday I was fortunate enough to make it to Ann Arbor, MI for the annual intra-state rivalry between the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans. I went to MSU along with my brother. 90% of the rest of my family including my mother and my sister went to U of M. I probably have 30 (not exaggerating) cousins that went to U of M, and hardly any that went to State.
So every year I make an effort (have gone to the last three) to make it to either Ann Arbor or East Lansing, Michigan for the big rivalry.
There is one major problem with Big 10 college football- the league rules don't allow for any drinking inside stadiums and arenas. I guess they think that it curbs unacceptable behavior and public displays of stupidity, nudity, drunkenness, or otherwise. What I see, though, is an opposite effect. Thousands of people gather in various parking lots and/or fields around the stadiums for a tailgate party. This generally leads to people getting super loaded before the game because they know they can't have anything to drink when they get inside. This leads to many folks really overdoing it, hence the regression. Grown-ass men and women really acting like children or teenagers at best. I'm talking jell-O shots, keg stands, passing out, etc. What I notice the most is that people forget how to be drunk, like they don't remember how to keep their wits about them when drinking because they are out of practice. I saw a 40 year old woman fall on her ass. I saw a 50 year old man doing a keg stand. Maybe if they let people buy a drink or two inside then they wouldn't have to get so wasted before kick-off.

Now, on to the game. My boy Mikey hooked us up with field passes which allow you to go anywhere on the sidelines of the game to watch. This is every football fan's fantasy and I felt like a little kid out there. Truly amazing. The Spartans hung in there for there first victory in Ann Arbor in like 20 years, and it's my first time seeing them win a game against U of M in-person. Commitment, folks.
The thing about the state of Michigan that most people learned from an old Seinfeld episode is that it's the only state that gives 10 cents back on can deposits. So when you go to buy a six-pack, they charge you 60 cents extra, hoping you will bring the cans back and do the environment a favor and recycle. Most people at the tailgates just throw the cans anywhere and this leads to professional recyclers running around the game collecting cans to get cash. It's probably pretty lucrative actually, 10 cans are a buck. These guys probably make a couple of hundred dollars per game from it. Recycling.
Next thing to note is that the teams play in this annual game for an unofficial tournament trophy. It's called The Paul Bunyan Trophy, and whichever team wins they get to keep it for the year. My old nome de rap (yep) was Paul Bunyan. Coincidence? I think not. Next mission? Getting a flick with that weird wooden statue. I'm gonna do it and you will see it here first. Commitment. I bet you can't wait.

The Shady Family

We took Piper J. out trick-or-treating tonight so that Allison could get candy. I think our simple last year's Shady hoodies freaked folks out. Why? Happy Halloween.

Eminem "Feed Me Words" Freestyle

Back way back before they just switched everything over to mtv.com and moved everything on-line there used to be a different form of MTV Radio. I don't know where it was broadcast originally or what was done with all of it, but our friend Stretch Armstrong had a show or job up there back around '98. I didn't know that this was actually on video, I don't remember a camera, but the audio has been floating around out there for quite a while. As my grandfather Marvin Rosenberg used to say when seeing old photos of himself "Look at that head of hair, boy..."

Thanks to Shaheem for posting this vintage footage... where's the rest?

Eminem New Freestyle

We debuted this "I'm Having A Relapse" verse tonight on Shade45 live from the book release event for Eminem's The Way I Am. Here it is without the drops... Just in time for Halloween. Enjoy.

P.S. Em also announced the title of his new album tonight... Relapse.

The Way I Am Air Jordan 2

Today, Rosenblog is proud to bring you another worldwide exclusive... Seen here for the first time anywhere.
For the launch of Eminem's new book The Way I Am, we have again teamed up with Nike's Jordan Brand for a collaboration on another classic Jordan silhouette. Above is a spy pic of "The Way I Am" Air Jordan 2. This is a one-off, super limited edition sneaker.
This shoe marks the second collaboration with Eminem and Jordan Brand, the first being the Air Jordan 4 “Blueberry” that was a promo and contest winner only shoe released in conjunction with Eminem's album Encore. The Jordan 2 is Marshall's favorite Air Jordan sneaker, so he was super excited to get to be able to do another collaboration with his favorite sneaker brand.
The shoe, as seen above, will be produced in a different colorway than the original AJ2 and includes handwritten lyrics from Eminem's songs on the shoe detail (see the ankle collar and toe trim). The collaboration also includes a limited-edition "The Way I Am" Jordan T-shirt.
There will be only 313 pairs (signifying the area code for Detroit, MI) available for purchase at the official Jordan Brand “Flight Club”: www.airjordanflightclub.com. To receive an invitation code text "Flight Club" to 23623.
Proceeds from the shoe will go towards Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers Foundation, an organization primarily dedicated to helping disadvantaged youth in the state of Michigan.
At present time, the retail price of this collaboration is yet to be determined.
Eminem's "The Way I Am" book is available from Penguin/Dutton on Tuesday, October 21st.

Candidate Coffee

My favorite convenience store 7-11 (I love the Big Gulps people- pause) is holding their own poll for the impending presidential election. Apparently, when you buy a cup of coffee at 7-11's throughout the country you can either put your joe in a blue Obama cup or a red McCain cup. The results are reported weekly in USA Today. Check out the site here.
Well I guess that's one way to express your opinion and lodge a vote without registering. Pretty smart marketing by the creators of the Slurpee. Does the McCain coffee come maverick flavored with a hint of deception and the subtle taste of the same 'ole (I can't help myself)? No jokes about how you like your coffee like you like your presidents... please.
I can already see the die hard Obama supporters all jacked-up on cheap coffee buying multiple cups running around Michigan screaming "we got this, people!"

Eminem- The Way I Am Contest

On October 21st, Em is releasing his second book. The Way I Am is a collection of Marshall's personal stories, reflections, photographs, original artwork, and never before published lyric sheets. In the first printing of the book, there is also a DVD included which contains Em's personally shot video footage and unreleased interviews.
A couple of my favorite things about the book are the cover and the detachable lyric sheets. The cover is a red acetate film that slides over the traditional book print (similar to Jay-Z's Kingdom Come CD). The red jacket masks the collage of Em's handwritten lyrics on top of the underlying photo... you kind of have to see it to really get the effect. Also inside the book in the back are several perforated pages which one can pull out of the book. On these pages are reproductions of Em's actual lyric sheets for songs like "Stan" and "Lose Yourself". I fought hard for the book to have the pages detachable because there is something special about being able to hold the actual page in your hand and turn it around and around to decipher what Em's semi-legible writing is saying. (Somehow he reads right off of the pages with ease and can see the song there). Again, you have to really see the lyric sheets to fully understand what I'm describing.
S0, there are two ways to do that! First, of course, you can buy the book when it comes out on 10/21 everywhere in the U.S. Second, you can enter the Sirius Satellite Radio Shade45 contest for the book by clicking here. Grand prize winner will receive a all-expense paid trip to NYC for the book launch event along with other special prizes.
I'll post some other special stuff that we are doing to celebrate the release of the book over the next couple of weeks so check back in...

I am so full of sympathy and sorrow for the loss of our friend, Chris "Lil Chris" Baker and Travis's buddy, Charles "Che" Still. I'm sure there are some people out there that knew them or know Travis and AM that would like to offer their support. The best way to do so is by contributing to the funds that were established in their memory. If you can do so, please help out.

Read D.M.C.

Classic video from old-school TV show "Reading Rainbow" featuring a pro-learning version of "My Adidas" with JMJ rapping on it. My favorite thing is when Run grabs the sandwich from D and throws it away. Why? Did it smell funny or was he concerened with D's weight or something?

Below is a cover of 50/Justin's hit "Ayo (Technology)"... I'm not sure why, what or where. Or even how.
Milow - Ayo Technology (Music Video)

The New York Times: "Meta-Rap"

Check out this article by my man Jon Caramanica on what he has dubbed "meta-rap", more commonly and somewhat derogatorily referred to as "hipster rap". I don't know what to call it personally, and each of the artists mentioned in the article are somewhat unique to me, but there is some sort of intangible that links them together. It sure is nice to see the newest movement in hip-hop covered by the pinnacle of daily literati in any case. Go, Jon!
Be on the look out for The Knux new video for "Bang! Bang!" directed by Justin Francis very, very soon.

Guest Blogger- Elliott Wilson

So make no mistake about it, with the new baby, travelling, and the VMA's etc. I've been incredibly busy. I really enjoy doing this blog and will continue to do it until it's not fun anymore. But that's just it- I do it for enjoyment, and sometimes there are just too many other things that take priority and need attention.
So, in the interest of keeping your interest, I have decided to try- for the first time- a guest blog posting. The following is by former Editor-In-Chief of XXL magazine, sometimes radio personality on Shade45, and all around hip-hop madman Elliott Wilson. Elliott went to the VMA's and saw Kanye's performance etc. and wants to share his views on his new single "Love Lockdown" with the world. So, take it away, El...

Roc Boy Live Show Curse?

"Fuck it, we'll do it live."—Bill O'Reilly

OK the CDQ is out. "Love Lockdown." The masses of Internet geekdom are downloading it as I type. It's the song everyone had an opinion about it even before it was even officially mixed or mastered. Hate it or love it, we can't ignore it. Why? Well because Kanye West decided to try out his new material on one of the biggest stages on the planet: MTV VMA's. (This wasn't no Lupe goin' back to Indiana shit.)

It's been done before in rap land, I still remember gettin' hype over Jay-Z giving us a taste of "Izzo" at the BET awards awhile back. But you hip-hop cats should know this is quite a risky venture. See as the tired saying goes, You only get one time to make a first impression. And as the career of Rakim proves, what you hear on wax (hey I'm old school) is not always what you're gonna get for your ticket stub.

When Jay (with Kanye's urging) decided to perform the second verse from this then still unfinished "Dope Boy Fresh," at a Glow in the Dark MSG show, he reluctantly obliged. Turns out, it might've bit him in the ass. The vocal aggression found on that night was lost on the song's final audio version on which Jay prefers to playfully hanglide prose over the crunchy drums especially on his end lines. "But they know the words to my shit." Or "I'd probably jock me tooooo!!!!!"

Kanye might have slipped on the same banana peel. If you didn't like "LL" live, you won't feel it now. If you fell in love with the live "LL" and played it relentlessly, you're not gonna be feelin' the CDQ. That's at least, at first listen. Some songs you don't like at first do grow on your ears. Believe it or not ?uesto.

As previously revealed, autotune is aplenty here. But that's not the problem. Try the chorus where the drums kick in and one of the strongest pop hooks in recent times gets lost in the mix. Plus Ye's scatting and humming instead of really delivering his words with the passion he did last Sunday.

The moral of the story, kids. Perception rules reality. The other day when people kept pressing me for my opinion: I boldly declared "LL" would be bigger than "Gold Digger." Now of course, I'm not so sure. But I'm gonna stick to the script cause no one likes a Nasir Jones and Jayceon Taylor (aka The Hypocritters).

The world's one big A&R. And are opinions seem to change like we change our drawers. Still I for one, wouldn't mind if Mr. West did one more take.

P.S. I'm so glad "Swagga Like Us" mp3 leaked before any live attempts were made. Somebody thank that bootlegger. He needs a hug.

A link to Kanye's "Love Lockdown" is here. The opinions expressed above are, of course, not that of Paulrosenblog.com nor those of it's editor/writer/creator.

Travis Barker & DJ AM- VMA Preview

Oh the building excitement! Except for the fact that it's the NFL's Sunday 2008 season kickoff (only MTV would put the VMA's on the same day, huh?) this is the thing to watch today. Travis and AM are the "house band" for the 2008 VMA's, and will play throughout the show in and out of commercial breaks and will also back 4 different performances on tonight's show. Don't miss it- 9PM EST on MTV. This is an exclusive Rosenblog photo from Saturday's rehearsals.

The R On E

This is an interesting video interview with Rakim by some French journalist. Try as he may in his European media way to sway the interview subject and let his own feelings and opinions be known, The G-d doesn't waiver on his praise for Em.

If the French man had it his way, Marshall would be wearing "clown" suits, Scarface would only make songs with The Geto Boys, and Em wouldn't have made D12 albums. Way to make your agenda known monsieur... Thank you Rakim for staying the course and being one of the best to ever rap. Props to T-Mac for the linkage.

Big Dog Robot

This thing is absolutely insane. It's a remote controlled robot that looks like some kind of crazy spider dog with 4 human legs. Big Dog jumps, can carry loads, walk on snow, ice, rocks, up hills, etc. The St. Bernard is in for a challenge on the ski-lifts. Among other applications, of course.

This could also signify the end of the world or that we are getting closer to some Space Odyssey 2001 Robocop Terminator land. Regardless that is one crazy remarkable robot. Check out the official link to the Boston Dynamics site here. Props to Dart for the link, I hope I didn't scoop Hellyup.

Trv$DJAM LATimes

Great LA Times article right here on our own Travis Barker and his remix game along with the recent DJ AM collaborations. Also, this lets the cat out of the bag- Travis and AM will serve as the "house band" for thie year's MTV Video Music Awards on 9/7/2008. Props to Jenni on the PR.

Joker Bank Robber

Yeah, I collect toys. I only buy the stuff that I really like, which is a lot, but it's fun so there. This Joker toy from Heath Ledger's Dark Knight rendition looks like it just could be the coolest superhero toy ever made.
It comes with 2 heads, the clown mask, guns, cash and a bag. Seriously even if you don't care about toys at all you have to recognize how incredible this thing looks. So, dare I say, lifelike... Props to Riggs for the link.

Lose Yourself, Clarise...

This is a couple of years old but I found the link for it while clearing out some old e-mails earlier today. It's amazing how she kind of tried to rap the lyrics, and not just quote them. First time I ever saw Jodi act was in a film called Bugsy Malone... I wish that movie was available on DVD.

It Takes Guts

Spotted this fella out for a little bike ride in the hot Central Florida sun yesterday. I'm not sure if the spandex biker shorts or the decision to go shirtless is more problematic. I'm certainly no Adonis but come on, why, Bro?

Rev Jude

Co-host of The All-Out Show on Sirius Satellite Radio's Shade45, Rude Jude, announced last week that he's an ordained Reverend. Listen below as he sets forth his explanation to the listeners and Lord Sear... Jude is a very entertaining and extraordinarily confused young man. He'd now like to be referred to as Reverend Rude Jude Angelini and has placed himself in the company of real Reverends, like Reverend Jesse Jackson. I know Jude, and I can't tell if he's completely joking or not. What do you think?

You don't want me to rebuke you, dude.

Toyota?

I don't know why I think this is so funny. Maybe it's the look on the woman's face... whether it's fake or not it's damn funny. Shouts out to Skone for the article.

On another note, remember when dudes used to take of letters on the back of there Toyota trucks so that they just read "YO"? I really hated that.

Jay-Z on Shade45

Over the past few weeks since the departure of Cipha Sounds from the Shade45 Morning Show we have been checking out how our beloved Angela Yee has faired with new various co-hosts. One of the most regular and recurring favorites has been former Editor-In-Chief of XXL magazine, Elliott Wilson. I know this will just refuel the false rumors that Shady and/or Interscope had/has some hand in the magazine since we helped them grab the rap mag crown since our classic Em/Dre/50 cover back in '02, but who cares... Elliott has stepped to the plate big.
So big, in fact (pause) that he brought the one-and-only Hov out to be interviewed on the show last week. Check out the clip below from the show and hear Ms. Yee stretch the boundaries of radio appropriateness, and a certain part of her anatomy, for Jay-Z. This is what satellite radio is all about, kids.

Sorry for the slow posting these days... family duty comes first. I'm getting back up to speed though don't worry!

She Doesn't Need a Hook...

But she might need some better fitting clothes. Why does she keep knocking people down? I thought they were her friends.

Barack and the Jewish Vote

This is a very funny piece from The Daily Show about the Jewish vote in South Florida. The old guy that keeps yelling at the lady about "fillabustering" is hilarious.
